Skilled Nursing Unit

At Regional Hospital of Scranton, our skilled nursing unit offers a practical and compassionate approach toward providing interim care for residents who don't need acute care treatment, but are still not ready to return home.

Our Skilled Nursing Unit provides a nurturing setting that offers more intense care than a community nursing facility, while remaining more affordable than acute hospital care. This unit works to rehabilitate residents and restore them to their optimal level of health and quality of life.

How Are Residents Admitted?
With the approval of their physician, residents are admitted to the Skilled Nursing Unit after a hospital stay for surgery, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, fracture, acute illness or other similar conditions.

Team Approach Toward Caring
Our Skilled Nursing Unit takes pride in our interdisciplinary team approach toward resident care. We actively encourage and invite family members to join our residents in working with their personal physician, the facility administrator and our gerontology-trained medical team to develop a personalized program of care that satisfies each resident’s individual goals and needs.

Our expert team includes practical nurses and certified nursing assistants under the direction of registered nurses, social workers, dietitians, pharmacists, activities coordinators and therapists. Their common goal is to help our residents progress to the next level of care, which is most often home care.

A Warm, Friendly Environment
Residents in our Skilled Nursing Unit are treated in a comfortable, home-like setting that’s designed to ease anxiety and promote healing.

This modern, self-contained facility is specifically designed for the interim care of its residents. Private rooms are available, with washers and dryers for residents who wish to do their own laundry. Although rooms are comfortably furnished – including a telephone and television – residents are also encouraged to personalize their living space with small, familiar items from home, like a blanket, pillow or photographs.

We also suggest that residents dress in their own, everyday clothing – to help set the tone for a return to their normal lifestyles.

Meals and Recreational Activities
We serve delicious and nutritional meals three times a day in our facility’s private dinning room. Residents may also arrange to have outside guests come and dine with them.

Our residents are also encouraged to participate in recreational activities, such as games and arts and crafts that are both therapeutic and fun!

A Wide Range of Services
Because we’re located within Regional Hospital of Scranton, our residents receive the benefits of continuity and consistency. They even maintain access to their personal physicians as well as the hospital's excellent ancillary services.

During an average stay of 8-14 days, residents receive:
  • Hip & Knee Institute care
  • a shared “team approach” toward joint replacement recovery
  • IV and antibiotic therapy
  • pain management
  • resident and family education – including cardiac, colostomy and diabetic
  • pharmacy, nutrition, social, pastoral and nursing services
  • physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapy
  • pressure sore management
  • tube feedings
  • wound management

For those patients who have been discharged from an acute care setting, but still require intensive skilled care, subacute care is available. Regional Hospital of Scranton's laboratory, radiology and pharmacy services, as well as dental, podiatric and ophthalmic services remain accessible to residents. And, if ever the need should arise, the hospital's emergency services are close and easily accessible.

Where Visitors Are Always Welcome
Visitors of any age are welcome anytime – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Special arrangements can even be made for pets to visit!

Residents can watch television, view videos or listen to music in a bright recreation area with their family and friends. A comfortable, quiet lounge is also open to residents and their guests.
