- Only hospital in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area to Achieve America’s 50 Best Hospitals Recognition
SCANTON, Pa. (March 20, 2012) – Regional Hospital of Scranton announced today that its clinical quality has placed it among an elite group of U.S. hospitals: HealthGrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals. To be recognized with this distinction, hospitals must have had risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates that were in the top 5% in the nation for the most consecutive years. On average, patients treated at America’s 50 Best Hospitals had nearly a 30% lower risk of death. Regional Hospital of Scranton is one of only 18 hospitals in the nation named six years in a row.
Recently, HealthGrades also announced Regional Hospital of Scranton as one of the nations’ 100 Best Hospitals in 2012 for Cardiac Care, Cardiac Surgery, and Pulmonary Care; no other hospital in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area earned these distinctions nor has any earned more awards in more specialities. And as was announced last month, Regional Hospital is the only hospital in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area to be recognized among the top 5% of all U.S. hospitals for Emergency Medicine.
Regional Hospital of Scranton Chief Executive Officer Brooks Turkel expressed great satisfaction with the recognition. “We are thrilled the data once again shows that we are delivering care in the top 1% of overall quality among all US hospitals. It is very gratifying to have independent validation of what we at Regional know – great care is delivered here every day by our outstanding medical staff and talented and dedicated employees. We proudly share this honor with all of the healthcare professionals, support staff, and volunteers that work at Regional and thank them for all that they do to provide excellent patient care. With these awards, the residents of our community have independent analysis that shows that they can get some of the very best care right here in Scranton.”
HealthGrades found that if all U.S. hospitals had performed at the level of Regional Hospital of Scranton, more than a half million Medicare deaths could have been prevented between 2000 and 2010. This finding was based on an analysis of more than 150 million Medicare patient records.
“As our nation seeks to elevate the quality of care at all hospitals, these elite facilities provide a roadmap for success,” said Dr. Arshad Rahim, HealthGrades Director of Accelerated Clinical Excellence. “Consumers increasingly are demanding greater transparency and quality when selecting healthcare providers. These hospitals are delivering. We commend them for their dedication to excellence in patient care.”
“What I find most impressive about this award, is the consistency of quality performance it represents,” Mr. Turkel emphasized. “To sustain this high level of quality and clinical outcomes year after year indicates that our clinical teams, operational structure and focus on every aspect of the patient experience are among the very best in the nation. I am honored to work with the caring people who serve our patients at Regional Hospital. Our community has our commitment that we will continue to work toward maintaining and enhancing this level of excellence in the years ahead,” he added.
